Phosphatidylserine is a naturally occurring phospholipid found in high concentrations in the brain, where it plays a critical role in maintaining the structure and function of cell membranes.
Why Phosphatidylserine Is Important
Healthy neuronal membranes are essential for efficient communication between brain cells. Phosphatidylserine helps maintain membrane fluidity, allowing neurotransmitters to transmit signals effectively.
As people age, phosphatidylserine levels in the brain may decline, which has led researchers to investigate whether supplementation could support cognitive health.
Evidence from Research
Clinical studies have shown that phosphatidylserine supplementation may support cognitive performance in older adults experiencing age-related memory changes. In one double-blind study, participants taking phosphatidylserine demonstrated improvements in memory and learning tasks compared with placebo.
These findings suggest phosphatidylserine may help support cognitive function by maintaining healthy neuronal membranes and signaling processes.
