Ginkgo biloba is one of the most widely studied herbal supplements for brain health and cognitive support. Derived from the leaves of the ancient maidenhair tree, it has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and is now commonly included in supplements aimed at supporting memory, focus, and overall cognitive function.
How Ginkgo Biloba May Support the Brain
Ginkgo biloba contains several biologically active compounds, including flavonoids and terpenoids, which are known for their antioxidant and vascular effects. These compounds are thought to help protect neurons from oxidative stress and may improve blood flow to the brain, potentially supporting cognitive processes such as memory and attention.
Because the brain requires a consistent supply of oxygen and nutrients, improved cerebral circulation is one mechanism researchers believe could contribute to the cognitive benefits associated with this botanical ingredient.
Evidence from Clinical Research
A number of clinical studies and systematic reviews have examined the potential cognitive effects of standardized ginkgo extracts. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving older adults, participants who received 180 mg of a standardized ginkgo biloba extract showed improvements in certain memory-related tasks and self-reported memory performance compared with placebo.
In addition, a systematic review of randomized controlled trials evaluating the standardized extract reported significant improvements in several cognitive domains, including memory, attention, and executive function, in patients with mild neurocognitive impairment.
Another meta-analysis examining multiple randomized trials found that ginkgo biloba extract improved cognitive test scores and daily functioning in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment when used alongside conventional treatment.
Potential Benefits Beyond Memory
Beyond its effects on cognition, researchers have also investigated ginkgo biloba’s potential influence on mood and neurological symptoms. Some studies report improvements in neuropsychiatric symptoms such as anxiety and depression in individuals with cognitive impairment when taking standardized ginkgo extracts.
These findings suggest that ginkgo biloba may contribute to overall brain wellness by supporting multiple aspects of neurological health.
The Takeaway
While research continues to explore the full extent of its benefits, current scientific literature indicates that standardized ginkgo biloba extracts may provide supportive effects for memory, attention, and cognitive performance in certain populations, particularly older adults or individuals experiencing cognitive decline.
When combined with other evidence-based nutrients and healthy lifestyle habits—such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate sleep—ginkgo biloba may be a valuable component of a comprehensive approach to maintaining cognitive health.
